Ingredients 

For Dal

  • 1 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 4 cups water
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste

For Dhokli

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ¼ teaspoon red chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Water as needed

For Tempering

  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala
  • ½ teaspoon red chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon coriander powder

Garnish

  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • Lemon wedges

Instructions 

  1. Wash and cook toor dal with turmeric and salt until soft. Mash and set aside.
  2. Mix flour, turmeric, red chili powder, carom seeds, and oil. Add water and knead into a dough. Roll out and cut into diamond shapes.
  3. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, and green chilies. Add tomatoes and cook until soft.
  4. Add mashed dal, water, garam masala, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Bring to a boil.
  5. Add dhokli pieces and cook until they float and are cooked through.
  6. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with lemon wedges.
