Indian Handvo Recipe

Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rice
  • ½ cup Chana Dal
  • ½ cup Toor Dal
  • ½ cup Urad Dal
  • 1 cup Grated Bottle Gourd
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger Paste
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Paste
  • 2 teaspoon Green Chili Paste
  • ½ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • to taste Salt
  • 2 tablespoon Oil for tempering

Instructions 

  1. Soak rice and dals together for 6-8 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain the water and grind the soaked mixture into a coarse batter.
  3. Add grated bottle gourd, ginger paste, garlic paste, green chili paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to the batter. Mix well.
  4. Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and asafoetida. Let them splutter.
  5. Add the tempering to the batter and mix well.
  6. Just before cooking, add baking soda to the batter and mix gently.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased non-stick pan and spread it evenly.
  8. Cover and cook on low heat for about 20-25 minutes or until the bottom is golden brown.
  9. Flip the Handvo and cook the other side for another 15-20 minutes or until fully cooked.
  10. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before cutting into pieces. Serve warm.
