Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup Toor Dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1 cup Ripe Mango, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt to taste
  • 2 cups Water

Tempering Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoon Ghee or Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 2 units Dried Red Chilies
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 10 units Curry Leaves

Instructions 

  1. 1. Rinse the toor dal under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. 2. In a saucepan, combine the rinsed dal, turmeric powder, salt, and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the dal is soft and cooked, about 20 minutes.
  3. 3. Add the chopped mango to the cooked dal and simmer for another 5-10 minutes until the mango is soft.
  4. 4. In a small pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  5. 5. Add the cumin seeds, dried red chilies, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
  6. 6. Pour the tempering over the cooked dal and mango mixture. Stir well to combine.
  7. 7. Serve hot with rice or roti.
