Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup Chana Dal (split chickpeas)
  • 1 cup Urad Dal (split black gram)
  • 1 large Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium Tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger-Garlic Paste
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 2 tablespoon Ghee or Oil
  • to taste Salt
  • 2 cups Water
  • 2 tablespoon Fresh Coriander, chopped for garnish

Instructions 

  1. Rinse the chana dal and urad dal thoroughly and soak them in water for about 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dals, 2 cups of water, and a pinch of salt. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dals are soft.
  3. Heat ghee or oil in a frying pan. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil starts to separate.
  6. Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes on low heat.
  7. Stir in garam masala and cook for another 2 minutes.
  8. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with rice or roti.
